In the year 2000 peace negotiations were underway - this is an historical record of how bad things were in 1996 when I was involved in a small way.

BOUGAINVILLE MEDIA RELEASE, Tuesday 11 June, 1996

Intelligence Reports from a reliable source on the ground, have revealed (Sunday 9 June 1996) that PNGDF Army is now preparing a major offensive operation against the Bougainville Revolutionary Army (BRA) in the Central and South Bougainville areas within two to three weeks time.

The source said that the PNGDF Army on the ground (Bougainville) are now supplying all Bougainvillean Resistant Fighters with high-powered automatic riffles or guns to prepare them for the countdown.

The reliable soure also said that the PNGDF Army are targetting their old forward bases along the coastline which were re-captured and are now under the B.R.A. control. The places include Aropa Airport and the Koromira Catholic Mission in Koromira area.

The sources said that the PNGDF Army would like to secure the coastline of Bougainville before moving to the inland of Central and South Bougainville to flush out the rebels and their supporters.

The Intelligence reports had also revealed that the PNGDF officials have gone to Israel to negotiate for more powerful arms and even the Israeli Army personnel.

The source said yesterday that the PNGDF officials have asked for the Israeli Army personnel to come over to Bougainville Island and help them fight the rebel B.R.A. and flush them out from the jungles.

Responding to these Intelligence reports, the B.R.A. major general commander, Mr Sam Kauona said the morale of the B.R.A. soldiers is very high and they (the B.R.A.'s) are on full red alert to counter any possible attack by the PNGDF Army.
