Mad Cow Disease in the United States

DIE TAGESZEITUNG, a highly respected progressive daily in Germany, reported that the desease is by no means just a European problem.

Because the danger of getting infected by eating beef products could be concealed in the US media, I translate you the above copied portion of today's DIE TAGESZEITUNG. Please forward its content. During my repeated stays in the USA, I always felt protected here from this terrible "European" disease. But now I have to changed my attitude: I will not more eat american steaks, Hamburgers etc., even milk products.

US citizens should ask the Government and their local health authorities as well if they did inform the public correctly and immediatedly about the consequences of the following facts:

"US environmental expert and former cattle rancher Howard Lyman has warned now of an epidemic similar to BSE. There is no BSE in the US, but the Downer Cow Syndrome (DCS). About 100.000 cattle die of it per year. Recently scholars have found a link between DCS and a BSE-like encephalopthy (deadly brain disease). " A high percentage of those DCS cattle becomes shredded into feedable powder to feed other cattle" Lyman says. [Notice of translator: This exactly was the reason why BSE jumped the species barrier in England!] Minks which were fed with this cattle powder in labor experiments got BSE. Brain tissue of these minks then were injected into cows: 1 1/2 years later these cows died." (From: DIE TAGESZEITUNG, German daily, 3/27/96)
